Design Director
With a degree in Art, Emphasis in Graphic Design from the University of Northern Iowa, Amy brings of love for creation and design to the Forty team. “I wanted to be an artist, especially a potter. But then the practical side of me took over. I always knew I wanted to create things, and I like to organize things. So when I discovered design in college I fell in love and now I’m lucky enough to do just want I wanted,” she says.
Currently serving on the Board of Directors for AIGA and a regular attendee to Gangplank Academy lunches, those who know Amy may be surprised to know she used to be incredibly high-strung. “One time during a design internship in college, I tried running a small piece of paper through the copier and it got stuck. The office manager didn’t yell at me or anything, but I was so upset I went into the bathroom and threw up. I made it a goal to chill out considerably, which I’m happy about,” she says.
Amy is particularly inspired by the work of Charles and Ray Eames as well as Barack Obama. Some books she finds useful in her professional life include ‘Transcending CSS: The Fine Art of Web Design’ by Andy Clarke, ‘Stop Stealing Sheep & Find Out How Type Works’ by Erik Spiekermann and E.M. Ginger, and ‘The Brand Gap’ by Marty Neumeier. If she weren’t currently in the field of her dreams, Amy would want to create a cruelty-free cosmetics and skincare line. “Of course I’d want to design all of the packaging and advertising,” she says.
